NiMet, AKADEMIYA2063 Collaborate On Climate Data

By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have disclosed their partnership on artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and capacity development to enhance climate monitoring and support food security initiatives across Africa.

This disclosure was made on Friday when the Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, Dr. Debisi Araba, visited Director General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to strengthening weather and climate services for national development.

He highlighted the growing influence of AI and data-driven modelling in meteorological operations, noting that the agency already has staff with expertise in AI and machine learning who have developed innovative tools for data collection, analysis, and forecasting.

Dr. Araba, in his remarks, outlined AKADEMIYA2063’s core mission of enhancing Africa’s capacity for climate resilience, agricultural transformation, and food security.

He identified persistent challenges—including inadequate agricultural data, limited analytical capacity, weak research-to-policy linkages, and poor monitoring systems—as barriers that the organisation is working to overcome through improved knowledge infrastructure and actionable policy research.

Both organisations agreed on the urgent need for stronger collaboration to support climate adaptation and sustainable development across the continent. While NiMet provides meteorological expertise and timely weather information, AKADEMIYA2063 offers advanced analytics and policy support for data-driven agricultural planning.

The visit concluded with a joint commitment to establish a technical working group, develop a memorandum of understanding (MoU), and schedule follow-up engagements to operationalise key initiatives.

The partnership is expected to deliver impactful solutions for society, the environment, and Africa’s development agenda.
