NiMet Deploys Electric Vehicles For Airside Operations In Major Airports
By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced the roll out of electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations across the country’s five international airports ,Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.
According to the agency on Tuesday, the development marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s push toward sustainable aviation.
NiMet said the initiative, which is the first of its kind in the nation’s aviation industry, has positioned the agency as a frontrunner in environmental innovation and operational efficiency.
The agency added that the EVs, each with a range of up to 200 kilometers per charge ,will operate with purpose-built charging stations at every participating airport, forming a self-sustaining, zero-emission ecosystem for daily airside activities.
Beyond environmental benefits, the deployment is expected to boost NiMet’s service delivery by improving airside logistics, reducing fuel dependency, cutting operational costs, and minimizing downtime.
The move is also projected to enhance the agency’s capacity for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and aviation safety through more reliable, energy-efficient mobility.
NiMet’s Director General,Professor Charles Anosike, said the initiative underscores the agency’s commitment to sustainable development and technological innovation.
“Our focus is to lead by example in driving green transformation within the aviation sector. This deployment is a practical demonstration of NiMet’s resolve to support Nigeria’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy systems,” Anosike said.
With zero emissions, low maintenance requirements, and quiet operation, the EVs represent a key step in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and meet national carbon credit targets.
