NiMet Upskills Managers To Tackle Climate Risks

By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has intensified efforts to strengthen national climate resilience by investing in the managerial capacity of its workforce.

This followed a two-day Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) on Strategic Management in the Public Sector, organised in partnership with the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria (Chartered), for senior and mid-level officials.

The Director-General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, on Sunday said the training was timely, given the rising complexity of climate-related challenges confronting Nigeria.

“With people and good management, no country need be poor,” Anosike said. “Our responsibility is to grow the competence required to respond to adaptive challenges of climate change. Continuous learning is central to ensuring that we deliver public value in an environment of increasing uncertainty.”

He stressed that effective management remains crucial to ensuring order, stability, and efficiency in public institutions.

According to him, operational excellence depends on leaders’ ability to integrate multiple perspectives while maintaining teamwork and trust.

The programme exposed participants to strategic modules that cut across succession planning, stakeholder engagement, financial management, public entrepreneurship, organisational culture, ethics, and strategy simulations—tools needed to improve decision-making and service delivery.

NiMet maintains that building a modern, competent workforce is essential to strengthening the country’s capacity for climate forecasting, early warning, and disaster preparedness.

The agency said the training further aligns with its broader commitment to professional development and the delivery of high-quality meteorological services that support agriculture, aviation, infrastructure planning, and national security.
