NITDA Boosts Digital Inclusion For Persons With Disabilities
By Stella Enenche, Abuja
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has empowered Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) with essential digital skills, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive participation in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
NITDA in a statement on Wednesday via its official X handle said the empowerment programme was implemented in partnership with the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) and SIMBED.
According to the agency, the programme is designed to ensure that no Nigerian is excluded from digital opportunities on the basis of physical ability.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, the Director of Special Duties, Mr. Oladejo Olawunmi, said the initiative goes beyond charity, stressing that PwDs are critical contributors to Nigeria’s digital future.
According to him, when the right tools and opportunities are provided, persons with disabilities can become innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders within the digital space.
“We are not just creating users of technology; we are nurturing problem-solvers and value creators who will drive productivity across sectors,” he said.
Olawunmi noted that the training programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong emphasis on inclusivity as a pillar of national development.
He reiterated that PwDs should be seen as active partners in progress rather than passive beneficiaries of support.
“Persons with Disabilities are not mere recipients of charity but vital contributors to Nigeria’s progress. With accessible and relevant digital skills, they are empowered to compete, innovate and lead in the digital economy,” he added.
He further emphasised that intentional and inclusive digital empowerment enables PwDs not only to participate in the digital ecosystem but to excel and create opportunities for others.
Congratulating the participants on the successful completion of the programme, the Director-General, through his representative, described them as “champions and ambassadors of digital inclusion.”
He encouraged them to deploy their newly acquired skills productively and to share knowledge within their communities.
NITDA said the initiative represents another step towards building a tech-driven economy that leaves no one behind, reinforcing the message that digital skills truly have no barriers.
