NLC Confirms Release Of Ajaero From DSS Detention

By Sunday Etuka, Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has confirmed the release of its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Comrade Ajaero was picked up by the DSS personnel on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, while trying to board a flight to the United Kingdom to attend the conference of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Although the reasons for his arrest are still unclear as no official statement has been released by the DSS, reports said, he was released a few minutes before the 12midnight ultimatum issued by the organised labour to shutdown the country.

The Union in a statement signed by it’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, described his detention “a brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation as he has not been declared wanted by any law enforcement body”.

NLC further stated that his detention “is an unmistakable demonstration of the height of lawlessness being perpetuated by the Nigerian government and its agencies in their bid to silence every voice of dissent and opposition in the country as the economic policies of the government continues to afflict the people with monumental suffering and hardship”
