NPF Commences Two-day Workshop On Human Rights-based Policing
By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the commencement of a two-day workshop for the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the Force PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, says that the workshop, which started yesterday, 7th May, 2024, is part of the drive towards achieving effective, efficient, and lasting human rights-based policing within the Force.
According to Egbetokun, the programme’s primary objective is to equip police officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle matters that are human rights-based and gender-sensitive, by promoting a culture of respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law.
Similarly, the Nigeria Police through collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has sought to strengthen the oversight and accountability mechanisms, thereby ensuring that police operations are conducted with transparency, integrity, and respect for human rights.
Consequently, a workshop, themed “Projects to strengthen the oversight and accountability mechanisms of the Nigeria Police,” which commenced from the 7th and will run till the 9th of May, 2024, at the Bolton White Hotel, FCT, Abuja, has begun.
“It will bring together Complaint Response Unit (CRU) officers from various commands across the country”, Adejobi stated.
The IGP, while extending his appreciation to the UNODC for its support and collaboration in organizing this important training program, equally emphasized that this initiative aligns with the broader goal of creating a Police that upholds the rule of law, safeguards human rights, and enhances public trust and confidence.
