PENGASSAN Strike May Lead To Total Grid Collapse -NISO Warns

By Sunday Etuka, Abuja

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has warned that the ongoing dispute between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Dangote Refinery, and the directive to cut gas supply to the facility and power plants in the country may lead to total grid collapse.

NISO, noting the potential implications of the directive on the nation’s power sector, in a statement on Sunday, explained that the national grid relies heavily on gas-fired generation, therefore, any sustained disruption in gas supply would constrain generation capacity, affect system operations and undermine the stability and reliability of electricity supply across the country.

The System Operator urged all parties involved to embrace dialogue and lawful mechanisms of dispute resolution in the overall interest of the economy and the wellbeing of Nigerians at large.

While reaffirming its commitment to ensuring a secure and reliable operation of the national grid, NISO said it would continue to support wider efforts aimed at safeguarding energy security.
