Reps Withdraw Bill Seeking Removal Of Immunity Of VP, Govs, Deputies

The House of Representative has stand down its earlier decision to strip off the immunity of the Vice President, the 36 States governors and deputies.

The House also withdrew another bill seeking to amend section of the Constitution to review penalty for certain category of offences.

The decision to stand down the two bills earlier passed for second reading yesterday was made on Thursday, during its plenary in Abuja.

The major reasons to strip off the immunity for VP, governors and deputies was to curb corruption, impunity and to enhance accountability.

The bill was sponsored by Reps member, Solomon Bob(PDP Rivers).

Moreso, the bill on penalty for certain capital offences titled; A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Cap. C23 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to Review the Penalties for Certain Capital Offences was to ensure the law tallies with Relevant International Best Practices.

The bill was sponsored by Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu & 6 others.

The Deputy Speaker who presided over plenary said the rescission of the decision to pass them for second reading became necessary in view of the need to subject them to further debate.

Kalu said the bills would be brought back to the House for debate by members in view of the sensitive nature of the issues involved.
