
The Nigerian Army has confirmed a tragic incident involving one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment, Niger state on 11 October 2025.
According to a statement on Monday by the Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, the late soldier, who served with 221 Battalion, was discovered dead alongside his wife in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the Cantonment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Lance Corporal Femi, who was on duty at the time, had sought permission from his superior to briefly attend to personal matters before the tragic discovery was made.
The incident has left residents of the barracks in shock, as authorities work to uncover the motive behind the fatal act. The remains of the deceased have been preserved for further examination, while a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the Commander 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, expressed the Army’s deep regret over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased.
He further assured that the Nigerian Army will thoroughly investigate the incident and make the findings public, adding that necessary measures will be implemented to prevent future occurrences.
