By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Defense Headquarters says troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have recorded significant operational gains across all theatres between 3 and 9 April 2026, sustaining coordinated offensives that have disrupted terrorist networks and dismantled criminal infrastructure.

A press statement issued on Friday by the Director of Defense Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, include other gains: foiled attacks, the rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of arms, ammunition and illicit materials, while denying hostile elements freedom of movement.

In the North-East, troops of Operation HADIN KAI intensified pressure on Boko Haram, ISWAP, and JAS fighters through sustained engagements across Borno and adjoining states.

Terrorists advancing toward Dikwa were repelled with artillery fire, while ambush operations in Gwoza disrupted logistics elements and led to recoveries of ammunition and supplies.

A suspected terrorist collaborator was also apprehended in Taraba. However, troops came under heavy attack in Benisheikh, where they held their ground but suffered the loss of the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General O.O. Braimah, and three other personnel.

Across the North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops conducted precision strikes and rapid-response missions, leading to arrests of suspected terrorists and collaborators, as well as the recovery of weapons.

Notably, troops rescued 31 hostages in Kaduna and 18 abducted persons, including infants, in Sokoto after ambush operations forced terrorists to abandon their victims. Swift responses also prevented further destruction following attacks in Katsina communities.

In the North-Central region, troops under Operations ENDURING PEACE and SAVANNAH SHIELD maintained strong offensive momentum, neutralising several terrorists, intercepting arms couriers, and rescuing kidnapped victims.

Major operations in Plateau and Kogi States led to the destruction of terrorist camps, recovery of weapons, and the rescue of over 20 victims. Additional ambushes and clearance operations further weakened criminal enclaves, while an attempted attack in Kwara was successfully repelled without casualties.

Operations in the South-East and South-South recorded progress in countering separatist-linked violence and oil-related crimes. In the South-East, troops neutralised fighters, destroyed camps, and recovered improvised explosive devices and ammunition linked to IPOB/ESN elements.

Meanwhile, in the South-South, anti-crude oil theft operations uncovered illegal refining infrastructure and intercepted large quantities of stolen petroleum products. Troops also foiled kidnapping attempts in Delta State, rescuing victims and recovering ransom money and weapons.

The Defence Headquarters expressed deep sorrow over the loss of personnel in Benisheikh, describing their sacrifice as a testament to courage and patriotism.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to intensifying operations nationwide, assuring Nigerians that the resolve of the Armed Forces remains unshaken and strengthened in honour of the fallen heroes.
