Troops Repel Isolated Attack In Borno

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (Northeast) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), came under an isolated terrorist attack on a military location in Monguno, Borno state.

OPHK’s Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, in a statement on Monday, said the incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, and troops engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, eventually forcing them to retreat while retaining control of the position.

Tragedy, however, struck shortly after the attack was repelled, when the Commanding Officer, moving to the scene to personally assess the situation, ran into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The explosion destroyed his vehicle and claimed his life alongside six other soldiers.

Military authorities said the officer’s actions reflected exceptional courage and leadership, noting that he chose to lead from the front even after the immediate threat had been neutralised. His decision to proceed to the frontline underscored his commitment to the safety and effectiveness of his troops.

Operation HADIN KAI described the fallen officer as a symbol of bravery, selfless service and duty, adding that his conduct represents the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.

The military also paid tribute to the six other personnel who died in the incident, honouring their sacrifice in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the Northeast.

Uba said the loss of the officer and his men would remain a painful reminder of the risks borne by troops, even as their sacrifice continues to inspire ongoing operations.
