Troops Repel ISWAP Assaults In Borno, Recover Heavy Weapons

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have repelled coordinated attacks by ISWAP fighters on Forward Operating Bases in Mayanti, Gajigana and Gajiram, recovering heavy arms and inflicting significant casualties on the insurgents.

OPHK’s Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

He said that the failed assaults, launched between late February 28 and the early hours of March 1, 2026, targeted bases in Sector 2 of the North-East theatre.

While troops maintained full control at Gajigana, fierce encounters at Mayanti and Gajiram resulted in multiple terrorist deaths and the seizure of combat equipment.

At Mayanti on February 28, troops withstood heavy gunfire from a large number of attackers. Reinforcements navigated ambushes and improvised explosive devices to reinforce the base and repel the assault.

Five terrorist bodies were recovered, alongside three PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, two RPG-7 tubes, four AK-47 rifles, two FN rifles, three RPG bombs and large quantities of 7.62mm ammunition.

Blood trails suggested additional casualties, including one officer who was killed in action.

Hours later, at about 1:15 a.m. on March 1, terrorists armed with PKT guns, RPGs and an armed drone attacked Gajiram but were repelled with air support. Three bodies were recovered along the withdrawal route.

Troops also seized four AK-47 rifles, five anti-tank bombs, three locally fabricated mortar bombs, an armed drone, six fully loaded 7.62mm NATO magazines, barbed wire cutters, specialised ammunition and other items. A wounded soldier was airlifted for advanced medical treatment.

In separate offensive operations, troops engaged fleeing insurgents at Kayawa Village, forcing them to abandon a tricycle, three motorcycles and five bicycles. Two suspected ISWAP logistics suppliers were arrested, while drugs and medical supplies were recovered.

Furthermore, an ambush around Bulturam Corner and Dadingel in Gujba LGA led to the neutralisation of two terrorists and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines and a bicycle.

Military authorities said all attacked locations remain under firm control, with the scale of recoveries reflecting continued pressure on ISWAP’s operational capacity.
