United States President, Donald Trump has reacted to the recent wave of deadly explosions in northeastern Nigeria, describing the situation as a “total disaster” and criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his response.
In a post shared on his social media platform on Tuesday, Trump said the coordinated attacks in Maiduguri, which reportedly targeted a hospital, a market, and a post office, had resulted in the deaths of many innocent people.
TheFact Daily had reported multiple explosions that occurred late Monday in key locations in Borno state, with a yet to be determined number of casualties.
Trump attributed the attacks to what he described as weak leadership and inadequate border control, warning that such conditions create opportunities for terrorist groups to operate.
Trump also took issue with Tinubu’s presence in the United Kingdom on a state visit amid the crisis, arguing that national leaders should remain in their countries during emergencies. He urged British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to advise Tinubu to return to Nigeria immediately.
“A real leader is on the ground with the military and the people,” Trump stated, adding that Nigeria’s government should prioritise strengthening security, closing borders, and protecting citizens.
The remarks come as Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgent violence in the northeast, largely driven by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, which have carried out attacks in the region for over a decade.
