U.S Mission Hails Edo People On Peaceful Gubernatorial Election

The United States (U.S) Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. has commended the people of Edo State on the peaceful conduct of the just concluded Governorship election.

This is according to a statement signed by Mills Jr. on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

He wrote: “The U.S. Mission in Nigeria commends the people of Edo State for the widely peaceful conduct of gubernatorial elections on September 21 and reiterates calls for calm following the announcement of results.

“We commend Governor Obaseki’s appeal for peace and urge all stakeholders, including INEC, to support established electoral processes and respect legal procedures to challenge results.

“Transparency and due process are crucial to maintaining public confidence in any democratic system. The United States reaffirms our commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, September 22, 2024 declared Monday Okpebholo winner of the Edo State 2024 Governorship Election.

Okpebholo beat his closest rival Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by scoring 291,667 votes.

PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo scored 247,274 votes and Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata scored 22,763 votes.
