The FCT Police Command has issued a stern warning to residents ahead of the ember-month festivities, urging the public to desist from the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and all forms of unauthorized pyrotechnics.
In a statement released on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, expressed concern over the rising circulation of these explosive items within the Territory.
TheFact Daily notes that as the year winds down and festive lights begin to colour the city, the familiar crackle of firecrackers is once again creeping into neighbourhoods across the Federal Capital Territory, but the FCT Police Command says this time, the risks are far too great to ignore.
According to Dantawaye, firecrackers pose severe safety threats, ranging from avoidable injuries and fire outbreaks to widespread panic, dangers that often escalate during the festive period.
The Police Command also highlighted that the loud sounds created by these explosives provide cover for criminal elements to conceal unlawful activities.
Beyond that, their indiscriminate use unsettles communities and puts vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions, at significant risk.
To curb these threats, CP Dantawaye has directed operatives across the FCT to strictly enforce the ban, warning that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any sale or use of firecrackers to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotlines: 08032003913 and 08068587311.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, advised residents to remain vigilant and report any sale or use of firecrackers to the nearest or through the command’s emergency hotlines: 08032003913 and 08068587311.
She further reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring a safe, peaceful, and crime-free festive season for all.
