The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a bold step in military innovation and sustainability by integrating Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology into its transport fleet.
The NAF disclosed this in a post on its X handle on Wednesday.
NAF, through its subsidiary, Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL), has partnered with the Presidential Initiative on CNG in a landmark collaboration that positions the NAF as a partner in green defence solutions.
The partnership was formally launched with the handover of three CNG-powered buses to the NAF. In addition, plans are underway to convert 30 NAF vehicles from petrol and diesel to CNG, significantly reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels while cutting operational costs.
The Service further revealed that to sustain the programme, 30 of its personnel will undergo specialised training to acquire the technical skills required for vehicle conversion, maintenance, and repairs.
“This partnership will pave the way for AETSL as a business entity to establish CNG conversion and refuelling centres in communities hosting NAF bases, ensuring ordinary Nigerians also enjoy cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable energy solutions”, the Service stated.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, hailed the initiative as a strategic milestone for the Service, noting that the partnership optimises NAF’s resources, enhances adaptability, and aligns its support services with Nigeria’s national priorities.
“It is another demonstration of the Nigerian Air Force’s ability to embrace innovation and drive sustainability in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative energy agenda”, he said, adding that, for the NAF, “the integration of CNG-powered platforms is of strategic importance, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, cutting operational costs, and aligning military support services with national priorities.”
Executive Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Barrister Ismael Ahmed, underscored the efficiency and clean energy gains of the reform. While commending the NAF for subscribing to this transition, He thanked the NAF for never relenting in its effort to ensure the safety of lives and properties of Nigerians.
Managing Director of AETSL, Air Vice Marshal Nnaemeka Ilo, described the collaboration as a “clear demonstration of institutional readiness and forward thinking.”
He reaffirmed AETSL’s commitment to advancing the partnership, including the training of technicians and exploring opportunities for broader CNG product distribution.
“This development underscores the NAF’s dual commitment: ensuring operational efficiency while contributing to Nigeria’s long-term energy security and environmental sustainability”, the Service said.
