2026: Adelabu Assures Reliable Power Supply Amid Failure To Achieve 6,000MW Target

By Sunday Etuka

Amid persistent failures to achieve the 6,000 MegaWatts (MW) promised to Nigerians in 2024 and 2025, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has again assured to deliver reliable, accessible, and sustainable electricity to power homes, and industries across the country.

Chief Adelabu who gave this assurance in his new year message to Nigerians and the people of Oyo State, noted that though 2025 came with its challenges, a lot of progress was made in ensuring stability in the national grid.

“A lot was done to strengthen the national grid through the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) known as the Siemens deal. This is why we have curbed the incessant grid collapse of previous years. As the Phase 1 of the PPI continues, we are assured of a strengthened grid that will make grid disturbance a thing of the past,” he said.

The Minister submitted that the outgoing year has been one of focused groundwork and deliberate strides within the power sector.

“We have confronted complex challenges head-on, from grid resilience to distribution efficiencies, and I remain profoundly grateful for the resilience and understanding shown. Your steadfastness is the bedrock upon which we are building a more robust energy future,” Adelabu said.

Looking ahead, he said “our focus remains unshakable: to deliver reliable, accessible, and sustainable electricity to power our homes, industries, and dreams. The path forward is built on continuity and renewed vigour.

“We will deepen our efforts on enhancing grid stability and expanding our transmission infrastructure to minimise disruptions. Our collaboration with distribution companies will be intensified to ensure improvements in service delivery and while our metering initiative reaches every community.

“Our, ‘Light Up Nigeria initiative’, remains a priority, with continued focus on industrial clusters and agricultural hubs to stimulate economic growth and job creation. We are equally committed to unlocking the potential of renewable energy, creating avenues for solar and hydropower to bring light to underserved areas.

According to the Minister, the journey ahead “requires a united front”.

He called on state governments, local communities, the private sector, and all citizens to be active partners.

“Protecting power infrastructure and embracing energy-efficient practices are vital contributions every Nigerian can make. Let us step into the new year with a shared commitment and a collective spirit of optimism. The work continues, and our resolve is stronger than ever. I wish you all a peaceful, prosperous, and brilliantly lit new year,” he said.
