One Dead, 30 Trapped in Niger Mining Site Collapse

One person has been confirmed dead while 30 others remain trapped after a mining pit collapsed in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro LGA of Niger state.
The mishap was said to have occurred on Monday after a heavy downpour.
According to a report from the area, six other people were rescued with “serious injuries” sustained from the collapsed mine.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Arah who confirmed this on Tuesday said, the mine belong to “African Minerals and Logistics Limited”.
Arah explained that the collapse of the mine was a result of, “persistent rainfall impacts that soften the soil”.
The NSEMA DG further disclosed that an excavator had been sent to the area to assist in rescue operation however, “the area is unacceptable because of the nature of the environment as a result of banditry”.
In another development, the agency also confirmed the report of persistent banditry activities in some communities in Shiroro and Mashegu local government areas in the last four days.
