Wild Animals Take Over Streets As Alau Dam Floods Maiduguri

Residents of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) on Tuesday morning woke up to scenes of submerged shops, houses, offices and recreational parks following collapse of the Alau Dam.

In a viral video, an Ostrich was spotted walking on the main road, while residents were warned to stay safe as other dangerous animals like crocodiles and snakes were also in the flooded streets.

One of the residents who listed affected areas to include Lagos street, Custom, Zoo, Maduganari, Monday Market, Post office, adding that only one bridge was functional now.

Reports also have it that the Emir of Borno’s palace was also flooded, forcing him to take refuge in the Government House.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Security of the State, Prof. Usman Tar in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 called for immediate evacuation of flood prone areas:

“Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all the residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties.

“The Alau Dam water has broken down another channel that is currently destroying farms and the water is heading toward the river bank”, he said.
