NPTF Bolster Training Of 13,000 Officers As IGP Pushes Deeper Ties

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for a stronger partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to drive ongoing police reforms, as new figures highlight the scale of interventions by the Fund.

Disu made the call while receiving the NPTF Executive Secretary, Mohammed Sheidu, and members of the Board at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where both sides held talks on improving operational effectiveness and sustaining reform efforts.

TheFact Daily notes that there is a real gap the Fund is helping to close in terms of training (especially in areas like intelligence, forensics and tactical operations), infrastructure boost (renovated police stations, training schools, barracks, etc) and equipment support (distribution of patrol vehicles, communication gadgets, etc). However there are areas where the gaps still show, especially sustainability (maintenance) issues and officer welfare.

Sheidu said the Fund has so far delivered over 100 training programmes for more than 13,000 police officers and executed over 170 infrastructure projects nationwide, alongside investments in housing, healthcare, and smart policing systems aimed at boosting capacity and modernising the Force.

Responding, the IGP stressed that aligning these interventions with the Force’s priorities—particularly in welfare—remains critical, noting that improved housing, healthcare, and insurance benefits are essential to morale and performance. He urged the Fund to channel more targeted support to junior officers, who he said bear the brunt of operational duties.

Disu reiterated his commitment to building a more responsive, technology-driven, and citizen-focused police force, describing sustained collaboration with the NPTF as key to achieving lasting reform.
