The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has used the occasion of Eid al-Fitr to call for responsible leadership and greater social accountability as Nigeria grapples with economic and security pressures.
In a message to Muslim faithful on Friday,CAN President, Daniel Okoh, said the lessons of Ramadan must translate into concrete actions that address the country’s challenges, particularly in governance and care for vulnerable citizens.
He stressed that while Eid is a time of celebration, it should also serve as a reminder of the duty of both leaders and citizens to act with compassion, fairness, and integrity.
Okoh noted that the current realities in Nigeria demand more than symbolic gestures, urging those in positions of authority to demonstrate commitment to improving the welfare of citizens through people-centered policies.
“The values of sacrifice, discipline and generosity observed during Ramadan must reflect in how we lead, how we serve, and how we relate with one another as Nigerians,” he said.
The CAN president also called on citizens to hold one another accountable, promote peaceful coexistence, and reject actions capable of deepening division across religious or ethnic lines.
He highlighted the importance of sustaining support for the poor and vulnerable, warning that worsening economic conditions have placed many Nigerians under severe strain.
Okoh said CAN joined Muslims in praying for peace, security, and national recovery, expressing hope that the spirit of Eid would inspire a renewed sense of responsibility among leaders and citizens alike.
He added that beyond festivities, Nigerians must embrace the moment as an opportunity to rebuild trust in institutions and strengthen the bonds that hold the country together.
CAN wished Muslims a fulfilling Eid celebration and urged all Nigerians to work collectively toward a more just, stable, and inclusive society.
