The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 31 suspected internet fraudsters during a sting operation at a cybercrime training hub in Becki Estate, Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the anti-graft’s spokesman, Dele Oyewole, the sting operation was conducted on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
The suspects, including two alleged kingpins and several trainees, were apprehended while undergoing tutorials in internet fraud. Recovered items include multiple mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other electronic devices.
Preliminary investigations by the EFCC revealed that some of the recruits were lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate employment. However, upon arrival, they were allegedly provided with communication gadgets, computers, and specialized software, initiating them into cyber fraud operations.
To enforce strict compliance, the academy operators reportedly confined the recruits within the premises, seized their mobile phones, and cut off all external communication.
In addition, reports indicate that erring trainees were subjected to corporal punishment, including severe physical assault.
The EFCC stated that all suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
