The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has directed that an official apology be conveyed over the controversial incident involving EFCC operatives at the Uyo University Teaching Hospital (UUTH) last week.
According to the anti-graft agency, the apology is to be directed to Professor Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of UUTH and members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), following the submission and review of a preliminary report on the May 12, 2026 episode that sparked outrage within the medical community and drew widespread public criticism.
TheFact Daily recalls that the incident occurred after EFCC operatives visited the Uyo University Teaching Hospital in what the Commission earlier described as an administrative operation linked to the authentication of medical records. However, the encounter reportedly degenerated into a confrontation with medical personnel, triggering protests and strong reactions from doctors and the Nigerian Medical Association, which condemned the conduct of the operatives and demanded accountability from the anti-graft agency.
Olukoyede, while acknowledging the discomfort and tension caused by the incident, stressed that the wellbeing of Nigerians remains central to the Commission’s mandate.
He reiterated the EFCC has launched a full-scale investigation into the matter, assuring that any officer found to have violated the Commission’s code of professional conduct would face internal disciplinary measures.
The EFCC chairman also pledged to engage relevant stakeholders to resolve lingering concerns and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents, while maintaining that the episode would not deter the Commission from carrying out its anti-corruption mandate across the country.
Olukoyede further appealed to the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies to continue supporting the EFCC in the fight against economic and financial crimes and corruption.
