The Democratic Front (TDF) has reacted to the recent allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo against his one-time Vice President and current Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, says the claims raise fresh questions about the former Vice President’s integrity.
Obasanjo had alleged that Atiku offered a N5 million bribe to the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, in connection with Na’Abba’s impeachment.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Wale Adedayo, TDF said the allegation, coming from a former President against his own former deputy, “calls for serious concern and introspection from concerned Nigerians,” noting that Na’Abba is no longer alive to give his own account of the events.
The group recalled that this is not the first time Obasanjo has accused Atiku of corruption and political disloyalty, pointing to Atiku’s earlier public apology to Obasanjo following corruption allegations contained in Obasanjo’s Memoir, “My Watch.” TDF described that apology as, in its view, an admission that has continued to trail Atiku’s political ambitions.
“Going by his inability to challenge the accusations through a legal action, it will be difficult for anyone to fault Obasanjo’s latest claim,” the statement said, adding that the development “opens a new Pandora Box” regarding Atiku’s public service record.
The group went further, describing Atiku as a politician it considers having “vaunting ambition” and a capacity for “mischief, treachery, and backstabbing,” arguing that such a person should be entrusted with public office. TDF said it found Obasanjo’s assessment credible given his history of working closely with Atiku.
The group urged Nigerians to view the allegations as a warning ahead of the 2027 Presidential election, urging voters do not support Atiku’s candidacy.
Atiku Abubakar and his campaign team have not yet issued a public response to TDF’s statement.
However, it should be noted that the claims in this report reflect the position of the Democratic Front and the allegations made by Olusegun Obasanjo; they have not been independently verified, and Atiku Abubakar has previously denied wrongdoing in relation to matters raised in Obasanjo’s Memoir.
