Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has distanced himself from a letter circulating on social media that is purportedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, describing it as a fabrication designed to mislead the public.
In a disclaimer issued Saturday, Obi said the letter, which touches on political and financial matters in Anambra State, was never written by him and that the signature attached to it was forged.
He described the document as “entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements.”
The letter in question calls on the traditional ruler and other Igbo leaders to encourage transparency over the financial records of the current Anambra State administration under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, urging that public disagreements be settled through facts and documented evidence rather than political accusations.
It closes with the Igbo proverb “Otu osisi anaghi eme ohia” (One tree does not make a forest) and is signed in Obi’s name as a former governor and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Obi urged members of the public and the media to disregard the publication, saying his attention remains on issues of national development and accountability rather than what he called “cheap fabrications.”
He did not say who he believes is responsible for circulating the letter, and there was no immediate confirmation from the palace of the Obi of Onitsha on whether it had received any such correspondence.
