The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has received the Climate Leadership Award for repositioning the agency and strengthening the use of weather and climate information in national development.

According to the agency, Anosike received the award at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards organised by The Daily Times of Nigeria in Lagos.

Since his appointment by President Bola Tinubu in December 2023, Anosike has pursued reforms aimed at improving the agency’s technological capabilities, operational efficiency and service delivery.

Under his leadership, NiMet has strengthened its role in providing weather and climate intelligence to critical sectors, particularly aviation, agriculture and disaster risk management.

The recognition also highlights the growing importance of meteorological services in helping Nigeria respond to climate change, extreme weather events and other environmental challenges.

Beyond routine weather forecasting, the agency has been working to ensure that climate information supports informed decisions, protects livelihoods and reduces risks to lives and property.

The award, presented as part of The Daily Times’ centenary celebration, also acknowledges NiMet’s growing contribution to international discussions on climate adaptation, early warning systems and sustainable development.

For NiMet, the honour underscores the importance of building a responsive meteorological institution capable of providing timely and reliable information to support national safety and economic productivity.

The agency said it would sustain its reform drive to ensure that weather and climate intelligence delivers greater value to Nigerians and strengthens the country’s resilience to climate-related threats.
