A House of Representatives candidate for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the FCT, Hon. Young Ugochukwu of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), has rolled out a campaign agenda built around legislative accountability, youth inclusion, rent regulation and closer engagement with voters as he prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Ugochukwu, who is vying for a seat in the Green Chambers, explained that his entry into politics grew out of a conviction that the legislature plays a central role in deepening democracy and checking excesses within the executive arm of government.
While answering questions from members of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja on Wednesday, the politician admitted he had once kept his distance from political activity, assuming it had little bearing on his life, before coming to believe that citizens who opt out of civic engagement risk leaving future generations to inherit the fallout of poor governance.
He argued that genuine legislative oversight demands that lawmakers critically examine government policies and proposals instead of rubber-stamping whatever the executive puts forward.
Ugochukwu said the direction of his legislative work would be shaped by the concerns residents themselves raise, rather than his personal priorities.
To that end, he proposed holding quarterly town hall meetings where constituents could discuss their challenges and vote on which projects or issues he should pursue at the National Assembly.
“The people’s agenda is my agenda, and I am contesting this election to make a difference,” he said, promising that his work in the legislature would remain open and easy for constituents to track.
On housing, Ugochukwu committed to pushing for legislation that would rein in rent increases and agency fees, while also offering free legal support through his foundation to residents facing unlawful or excessive eviction attempts.
He acknowledged that any such rent-control measure for the FCT would need buy-in from fellow lawmakers at the National Assembly.
Youth empowerment and political participation featured prominently in his platform as well.
He said he intends to back programmes that teach young Nigerians about the political process and encourage greater youth involvement in elections and elective office.
Addressing security, Ugochukwu said he and his team were looking into technology-based solutions to help tackle the “one-chance” robbery problem plaguing the FCT, particularly tools that could help commuters identify and trace vehicles.
He also pledged to push for improvements in healthcare and education through targeted constituency projects, while cautioning that lawmakers should avoid claiming personal credit for initiatives funded through government allocations.
A businessman originally from Anambra State who has lived in the FCT for over 15 years, Ugochukwu has interests spanning hospitality, construction, real estate, automobiles and logistics.
He said this business background has shaped his focus on accountability, accessibility and digital engagement with constituents.
He named accountability as one of Nigeria’s biggest governance shortcomings, insisting public officials must answer for their actions.
Ugochukwu, also stated he would owe no allegiance to a political godfather, saying his loyalty rests solely with voters, and urged the electorate to give candidates offering a different style of governance a chance, summing up his pitch as an invitation to “try something different.”
He closed by pledging that, if elected, he would prioritise the concerns constituents raise, maintain steady communication with them, and step back from office rather than cling to power if he could no longer serve effectively.
