The Director General Nigerian Meteorological Agency (Nimet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has been honoured with the 2026 Nigerian Educational Excellence Award in recognition of his contributions to advancing education through meteorology-based studies and training programmes in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

The award was presented on Monday at the Faculty of Education, Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

Represented at the ceremony by the Director of Weather Forecasting Services, Prof. Vincent Weli, Anosike described the award as a reflection of NiMet’s commitment to knowledge advancement and innovation in Nigeria.

He said the agency’s impact extends beyond weather forecasting into educational development through partnerships with institutions, curriculum support, practical meteorological training, and access to climate data for research and learning.

“As the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, I am privileged to lead an organisation whose impact stretches beyond weather forecasting into the heart of our nation’s educational development,” he said.

According to him, NiMet has continued to organise climate workshops and support the integration of meteorological modules into university programmes, thereby strengthening the connection between science and society.

Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to investing in the next generation of meteorologists, researchers, and innovators.

“Today’s recognition inspires us to deepen these partnerships and ensure that meteorological knowledge remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s educational advancement,” he stated.

Earlier, Prof. Weli said the award recognised Anosike’s efforts in transforming meteorological science into practical learning, training, and capacity development for students and young professionals across the country.

He noted that under Anosike’s leadership, NiMet had expanded collaborations with tertiary institutions to integrate operational weather data into courses in meteorology, geography, environmental science, and agriculture.

Weli added that the agency had also intensified the training of young meteorologists and technicians in modern forecasting tools, data analysis, and impact-based warning systems.

According to him, NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction and daily Weather Outlook have become practical teaching tools for lecturers, researchers, and students studying climate dynamics in Nigeria.

“This award recognises more than technical innovation; it recognises Prof. Anosike’s belief that education is the bridge between scientific knowledge and national resilience,” Weli said.

He added that by embedding training, mentorship, and research collaboration into NiMet’s core mandate, the agency had demonstrated that a public institution could function both as a service provider and an educational partner.

Weli attended the ceremony alongside the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Shola Gabriel, and the Special Assistant on General Services to the DG, Dr. Emmanuel Uket.
