By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The authorities of the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) have commenced an investigation into an alleged case of child abuse at the Kontagora Military Cantonment, Niger State.

NATRAC”s Assistant Director, Major Godfrey Abakpa, disclosed in a statement on Thursday, that the incident was reported on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

According to him, the incident reportedly came to light after a neighbouring soldier heard the distress cries of a child from an adjoining apartment.

On gaining access to the residence, he allegedly discovered a seven-year-old girl being physically assaulted by two sisters said to be relatives and custodians of the child.

Preliminary findings indicate that the child was allegedly punished over concerns about her earlier whereabouts. Additional information also suggests possible neglect, including alleged denial of meals and restriction from using basic household facilities. Eyewitness accounts further claimed that similar incidents may have occurred in the past despite previous warnings.

It was gathered that the child had been living with her uncle’s family within the cantonment following the death of her father. She was reportedly brought to the barracks to receive care and continue her education.

Following the report, the Commander of NATRAC, Major General A.G.L. Haruna, directed the NATRAC Military Police to commence a comprehensive investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The child was immediately evacuated to the Kontagora Military Cantonment Medical Centre for medical evaluation and is currently said to be in stable condition.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, temporary custody has been granted to another family within the cantonment who volunteered to provide care and support.

The NATRAC authorities reaffirmed their commitment to the welfare and protection of children and dependants of personnel serving in the Nigerian Army, assuring the public that appropriate sanctions will be applied in accordance with military regulations once investigations are concluded.
