The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed a strong and enduring partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Taraba State Government to intensify operations against terrorism and other security threats.
The COAS made this known on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, while receiving the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Colonel Agbu Kefas (rtd), alongside federal lawmakers and members of the Executive Council of the International Institute for African Ispense Security and Governance, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasized that the Nigerian Army remains firmly committed to its constitutional mandate of supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security. He described Taraba State as strategically significant within Nigeria’s security architecture due to its terrain and evolving security dynamics.
Commending Governor Kefas for his proactive leadership and effective coordination with security agencies, the COAS noted that the state government’s support—including the donation of land and provision of operational equipment—has served as a critical force multiplier, significantly boosting the effectiveness and reach of military operations.
He stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through sustained civil-military collaboration, appealing for continued partnership, particularly in providing stable electricity to the 20 Model Battalion in Sarti and the 23 Battalion. According to him, improved power supply would enhance operational efficiency, combat readiness and troop welfare.
The COAS also called for increased public sensitisation across Taraba State, urging residents to support security efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence, noting that community cooperation remains vital in defeating terrorists and criminal elements.
In his remarks, Governor Kefas described the visit as a demonstration of Taraba State’s unwavering solidarity with the Nigerian Army. He congratulated Lieutenant General Shaibu on his appointment and praised the professionalism, resilience and sacrifices of troops, adding that their sustained presence has led to noticeable improvements in the state’s security situation.
The Governor further applauded the strong inter-agency cooperation among security forces in the state and identified areas requiring enhanced military deployment. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to deepening its support for the Nigerian Army, including assistance with accommodation for deployed personnel, as both parties pledged to maintain a united and resolute stance against insecurity.
