CAN Demands Transparent Probe Into Ondo Air Force Crash

By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft near Igbokoda, Ondo State.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, on Tuesday, the Christian body expressed condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigerian Air Force, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and the Ondo State Government and people.

CAN, while mourning the personnel who lost their lives in the crash, said the circumstances surrounding the incident must be properly established and any safety recommendations arising from the investigation implemented.

Okoh said the sacrifice made by members of the Armed Forces extends beyond the personnel to their families, who also bear the burden of their service to the nation.

“At this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are particularly with the bereaved families and their colleagues in the Nigerian Air Force,” he said.

CAN welcomed the decision to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, urging that the process be conducted professionally and transparently.

The association said the findings of the investigation should not merely be documented but should receive the necessary attention to prevent similar tragedies.

“Every life lost is precious. We must therefore continue to strengthen aviation safety, aircraft maintenance, operational procedures and emergency response systems,” Okoh said.

He stressed that such measures were particularly important for personnel who undertake difficult and often hazardous assignments in the service of the country.

The CAN president also called on Nigerians to remember the affected families and the Nigerian Air Force in their prayers.

“May God grant eternal rest to the departed, comfort to the bereaved, and wisdom to all those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting lives,” he said.
