A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday has granted bail to Omoyele Sowore, Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (ACC) and Publisher of the Sahara Reporters, setting the sum at N200 million alongside two sureties.
Ruling on the matter, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered that one of the Surety, must be a traditional ruler from sowore’s community, while the other, must own a landed property in Abuja. The judge further directed that both sureties be verified by the prosecution team before Sowore can be released.
As an additional condition, the court ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the deputy chief registrar of the court. Justice Umar ruled that Sowore will remain in custody until all the bail conditions are fully met.
Sowore was arrested and charged to court by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a two-count cybercrime charge alleging cyberstalking and criminal defamation for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in August 2025, and for failing to appear in court after his bail was revoked.
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar revoked Sowore’s bail recently and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after neither Sowore nor his lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, appealed in court for the resumption of trial.
Although his bail revocation was condemned by Amnesty International and other well meaning Nigerians, warning that the development threatens his rights to liberty, fair trial and freedom of expression.
