The Delta State Police Command under the leadership of CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has established a specialised Violent Complaint Response Unit (VCRU) as part of a broader restructuring of its operational framework.
According to a statement on Saturday by the Comnand’s spokesman, SP Edafe Bright, the launch was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, to enhance operational efficiency, discipline, and accountability.
TheFact Daily reports that the VCRU, a newly introduced initiative of the Nigeria Police Force, rolled out across commands in April this year as part of broader police reforms aimed at faster, more accountable responses to serious incidents.
The CP stated that the VCRU is designed to handle violent and high-risk complaints, including threats to life, grievous assault, domestic violence, and other related offences requiring urgent police intervention.
The Unit will function as a rapid response and coordination platform, working in synergy with Divisions and Tactical teams to ensure prompt and professional handling of such incidents.
The Command stated that as part of the take-off process, selected personnel nominated into the Unit underwent a three-day intensive retraining programme during which the Commissioner of Police personally addressed the officers, charging them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.
The personnel were also taken through a series of key lectures, including sessions delivered by the officer in charge of the Legal Department, who provided guidance on legal frameworks, use of force, and compliance with extant laws. In addition, the officers were retrained on arms handling, musketry, and the lawful use of firearms, with emphasis on responsibility, restraint, and operational safety.
Oyeniyi emphasized that the reforms are aimed at deepening professional policing and restoring public confidence, while ensuring that violent incidents are responded to swiftly and effectively. He warned that negligence, misconduct, or abuse of human rights will not be tolerated.
Consequently, the CP has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units to give full support to the VCRU and ensure that all referrals are treated with urgency and in accordance with established procedures.
This is even as he assures residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges members of the public to promptly report incidents of violence through official police channels.
