The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of time in places where the voting commenced late in the ongoing governorship election in Edo State.
INEC National Commissioner and Member, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, announced the development in a statement on Saturday.
Haruna disclosed that the decision was in line with the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines.
He explained that the Commission’s monitoring indicates early commencement of polls in many polling units, but there are also reports of late commencement in some locations.
He said in order to ensure that no voter is disenfranchised, the voting would be extended wherever it commenced late and would continue until the last voter on the queue who arrived at the Polling Unit by 2.30pm has voted.
He said the Commission has drawn the attention of its office in Edo State to ensure that, where necessary, there is adequate power supply from the Commission’s backup electric generators in the affected Polling Units or Ward Collation Centres.
