Edo Police Dislodge Ritualists’ Den, Recover 20 Mummified Bodies

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed a viral video of corpses found in a house at Ekenwan Road in Benin City, the Edo State capital in South-South Nigeria.

According to the statement signed by the State Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Jennifer Iwegbu, on Wednesday, 17 August, the discovery of the corpses in a building along Asoro Slope off Ekenwan Road, Uzebu Quarters in Benin City, followed credible information received by the Command.

The PRO said that operatives of the Command immediately mobilised and stormed the scene where three suspects were arrested while others fled.

Those arrested are Chimaobi Okoewu and Oko Samuel, both of Afikpo in Ebonyi State, South-East Nigeria and Gideon Sunday from Akwa-Ibom State, South-South Nigeria, while intensive effort is ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects.

“15 mummified male corpses, 3 mummified female corpses and 2 mummified children corpses were discovered at the scene”, Iwegbu said.

Consequently, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State CID to carry out a discreet investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the discovered corpses.

He has further enjoined “the general public to be calm as the Command will continue to ensure the safety of all law-abiding citizens and those residing in Edo State”, the statement concluded.
