Edo State Deputy Governor, Shaibu Impeached
By Sunday Etuka, Abuja
The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu has been impeached by the State House of Assembly.
Shaibu was impeached on Monday during the assembly plenary session.
He was impeached
after the Assembly adopted the report of a seven-member probe panel set up to probe allegations of gross misconduct against him.
Recall, the Assembly on Wednesday last week accused Shaibu of leaking the state government’s secrets and committing perjury.
The Assembly also told the seven-man panel set up by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to probe the deputy governor that Shaibu’s alleged offences were impeachable offences.
This comes amid a prolonged rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and the deputy governor.
Shaibu’s politically predicament started when he indicated Interest to run for the governorship position under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His tall ambition was stiffened by Governor, Obaseki’s lack of support because of his own anointed candidate.
Against all odds, Shaibu won the parallel governorship primary election under the PDP conducted in the state in February 2024.
Unfortunately, Obaseki’s anointed candidate, Asue Ighodalo was also declared winner of another PDP faction, observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
