The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised concerns over escalating temperatures nationwide, issuing a heat stress alert as parts of the country brace for intense weather conditions.
According to the agency on Tuesday several northern states including Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa are expected to experience extreme temperatures ranging from 40°C to 45°C.
In the North Central region, temperatures are projected to hover between 35°C and 38°C, while southern states are likely to record slightly lower but still significant heat levels of 33°C to 35°C.
NiMet warned that the situation is further compounded by the presence of fine dust particles across parts of the northern region, a factor that could intensify discomfort and heighten public health concerns.
“The prevailing weather conditions increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, as well as the potential for meningitis outbreaks,” the agency noted.
As part of its advisory, NiMet urged residents to adopt preventive measures, including avoiding crowded and poorly ventilated environments, ensuring adequate airflow in living spaces, and reducing exposure to direct sunlight.
The agency also recommended wearing light, breathable clothing and maintaining regular hydration to cope with the extreme heat.
NiMet emphasised the need for continued public awareness and caution, calling on citizens to stay weather-smart and take proactive steps to protect their health during the ongoing heatwave.
