INEC Extends Deadline For Submission Of Candidate Lists By Political Parties

By Sunday Etuka

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their lists of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The original deadline, set for Saturday, July 11, 2026, under the Commission’s Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, has now been pushed to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

According to INEC, the extension followed an appeal from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), acting on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the original timeline.

In a statement issued Sunday by Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner & Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, INEC said the decision reflects its commitment to inclusivity while operating within the bounds of the law.

“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in its practices, while acting within the ambit of the law,” the statement read.

The Commission urged political parties to take advantage of this window of opportunity and ensure that all necessary details are uploaded before the expiration of the new deadline.

Parties that fail to meet the revised deadline risk missing the window to field candidates for next year’s general election.
