The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) says no fatalities or injuries were recorded following an incident involving a CNG-retrofitted Toyota Camry at a NIPCO Gas Filling Station on Airport Road, Abuja, on 13 September 2026, and has moved to reassure Nigerians that properly certified conversions remain safe.
According to the Council, investigations into the incident are still ongoing, but preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle may have been fitted with an extra cylinder that was neither approved nor suitable for CNG use.
NADDC, in a statement on Thursday, said it is collaborating with relevant authorities to ascertain the full facts of the incident and to further tighten regulatory oversight, compliance monitoring and public safety standards across CNG conversion activities nationwide.
As the regulatory body overseeing Nigeria’s automotive industry, the Council reiterated that CNG conversions must strictly involve approved components, professional installation at certified conversion centres, proper testing, and regular maintenance in accordance with established standards.
It therefore urged motorists to patronise only certified CNG conversion centres, insist on approved components, and avoid unauthorised modifications to their CNG systems.
NADDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting motorists and the public while providing the regulatory leadership necessary for the safe, orderly and sustainable growth of CNG mobility in Nigeria.
The Council also called on Nigerians to rely on verified information rather than misleading reports that could erode public confidence in properly certified CNG systems.
