‘Why Dangote’s Oil Facility Is More Than Just Petroleum Refinery’

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has described the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals (DPRP) as a sovereign investment and a major industrial platform capable of transforming Nigeria’s energy, trade and investment landscape.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Abuja International Trade Fair, the Chamber’s President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, said the importance of the facility goes beyond its refining capacity.

According to him, it also opens the way for extensive value chains, opportunities for manufacturers and service providers, technology transfer, foreign exchange conservation and higher export prospects.

The Chamber said the refinery’s operations could stimulate investment in logistics, transportation, petrochemicals, manufacturing and other sectors, while helping Nigeria reduce its reliance on imported refined petroleum products.

It added that the project shows how large-scale private sector investment can support industrialisation and strengthen the resilience of the economy.

“From ACCI’s perspective, a world-scale refinery operating in Nigeria has implications that extend beyond petroleum refining,” the Chamber said.

It explained that reliable domestic supply of refined products can benefit manufacturing, transportation, aviation, agriculture, logistics and other sectors whose operating costs are heavily influenced by energy.

The Chamber noted that the refinery’s own strategic objectives include reducing import dependency, strengthening energy security and building an export-oriented refining hub.

Its stated crude distillation capacity is currently 700,000 barrels per day, with a pathway to expand to 1.4 million barrels per day.

For Nigeria, it said, the opportunity lies in moving gradually from dependence on imported finished products towards greater domestic value addition and the export of refined and petrochemical products.

ACCI therefore sees the refinery as part of the wider infrastructure needed to boost productive capacity, deepen local supply chains, conserve foreign exchange and enhance the country’s participation in regional and global trade.

The key, it stressed, is to create the policy, infrastructure and regulatory conditions that allow investments of this scale to operate efficiently and competitively.

The Chamber commended Dangote Industries Limited for its sustained investment in Nigeria and its support for platforms such as the Abuja International Trade Fair.

It noted that stronger collaboration between government, organised business and major industrial operators would be critical to unlocking the full economic benefits of such investments.

It also urged Nigerian businesses, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, to position themselves to benefit from the emerging opportunities around the refinery and its wider value chains.

It encouraged continued dialogue on policies that promote investment, trade, job creation and sustainable economic growth.

Dangote Industries Limited is one of the major sponsors of the 2026 Abuja International Trade Fair.

Speaking at the Special Day of the Dangote Group, the Regional Director and Senior Adviser to the President/CE, Fatima Wali Abdurrahman, who was represented by Abdullahi Bello DanMusa, said the ongoing Initial Public Offering of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE connects trade, investment, industrialisation and economic inclusion.

“The public offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 per share. The minimum subscription is 10 shares, equivalent to ₦5,250. The offer opened on 14 September and is scheduled to close on 13 October 2026,” she said.
