The Defence Headquarters says about 129,419 terrorists have surrendered to troops of the Nigerian Military between July 10 and December 9, 2024.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, disclosed this at the ongoing Africa Security Watch awards and conference in Doha, Qatar.
While delivering a keynote address, Gen. Musa revealed that of the number of surrendered terrorists during the period, 30,426 were fighters; 36,774 women and 62,265 were children.
The increasingly frequent surrenders, the Defence Chief said, signify the fruitful impact of the military’s comprehensive approach, adding that Nigeria is making tremendous progress in the fight against insurgents through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.
He said that so far, communities across the nation, especially in the Northeast region where the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists have developed enclaves, have been stabilised by the Nigerian military.
“We have made significant progress in fostering a peaceful society that guarantees improved socio-economic conditions for our citizens. While challenges remain, we are not where we were as of June 2023,” Musa said.
