NEMA Commissions Automatic Weather Observation Station At Nasarawa Varsity

Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Mustapha Habib Ahmed has commissioned an Automatic Weather Observation Station installed by NEMA for Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

A statement signed by NEMA’s Head, Media and Public Relations, Mr. Manzo Ezekiel on Thursday, said that the event took place at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nasarawa State.

TheFact Nigeria gathered that a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed by NEMA, NIHSA and the University for handing over of the equipment by NEMA to the user and host.

The Director General said it was based on a request from NIHSA for partnership towards improving its data acquisition for monitoring of hydro-meteorological phenomenon (weather forecasting) in the country.

He further said that President Muhammadu Buhari had granted the request from NIHSA, leading to the installation of the weather station at the university in Keffi to support disaster early warning, preparedness, mitigation and academic research.

The Director General said: “A major tool for early warning system include the use of automatic weather station to compile historic data to enable credible weather and climate prediction.

“In this regard and in line with inter-agency mutual support and collaboration, NIHSA requested NEMA for partnership to boost its operations through establishment of three automatic weather stations.”

The Director General of NIHSA, Engr. Clement Nze appreciated NEMA for the partnership and said the installed equipment had increased the number of platforms used by his agency towards improved service delivery.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Suleiman Mohammed also appreciated NEMA and NIHSA for selecting his university to host the equipment.

He said that the station would be useful to the University for teaching and research, in addition to being utilized by NIHSA.
