AfCFTA: SON Working Hard To Improve Standards Of Nigeria’s Exports-DG

Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, (SON), Mallam Farouk Salim has said that with current African Continental Free Trade Area, (AfCFTA) the SON is working hard to improve the standards of the nation’s products going to other countries of the world.

Mallam Salim said this at the one day capacity building workshop for journalists which was hosted by the SON in Abuja.

Thefact Nigeria reports that the Director General used the occasion to highlight some of his achievements since resumption of office, upon his appointment on September 26, 2020.

They included signing of Memoranda of Understanding with some state governments to ensure that standard goods are produced packaged for export.

He said that his team went round the country and met with some state governors who provided land for the SON, while some still, provided office space for SON’s use temporarily pending the completion of their office buildings.

Salim also said that the SON has confiscated used tyres as they are illegal in the country, engaged steel producers, the companies that were found to be producing less quality standard steel fined, and caused to pay to the federal government while the steel were melted and reproduced to standards.

The SON helmsman spoke on improved welfare of the staff, among other issues

Salim stressed the importance of the journalism profession in the society and urged them to remember that the society is shaped by what they write.

Also Speaking, Chairman of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association, (CICAN), Mr. Fred Idehai promised that the association would give the Director General every support he’d need to succeed.

Eight papers were presented at the workshop on diverse topics by departmental heads of the SON.

The workshop was themed: Improved Synergy To Promote Standardisation.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Director, Legal Services, Barr. Umaru Kawu, Director, Product Certification, Mr. Tersoo Orngudwem, Director, PRS, Dr. Yahaya Nuhu Fana, Director, CA & SC, Dr. Justin Nickaf, Director, Finance and Accounts, Mr. Aaron Tam-George, Ag. Director of Operations, Mr. Dauda Yakubu, Deputy Director Procurement, Mr. Shehu Abubakar, Head, Public Affairs, Mr. Bola Fashina and Assistant Director, Small and Medium Enterprises, (SMEs), Mr. Phebean Arumemi who was represented.
