The Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Rt. Hon. Muhammed Goronyo has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving access to water across the country, including Sokoto State.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Ministry, Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
She said, the commitment was reiterated during a courtesy visit by the Sokoto-Rima River Basin delegates to the Minister of State’s office on Wednesday in Abuja.
Hon. Goronyo emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the agenda set by the present administration and assured the people of Sokoto that tangible progress is underway, with qualified engineers and water specialists actively engaged in developing and implementing strategic plans in Sokoto State.
He added that It is anticipated by the next quarter that 50% of the targeted population will have direct access to improved water supply.
In his remarks, Sokoto State Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Yusuf Mohammed who led the delegation of Sokoto State participants at the 30th Regular Meeting of National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation to the Honourable Minister of State, extended gratitude to the Minister of State for his dedication to Sokoto State’s development.
He emphasized the importance of convening a State Press Conference to further leverage the Minister of State’s support in addressing critical issues such as food security and water supply in the state.
Alhaji Ismail Wali, the Permanent Secretary of Sokoto State Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, highlighted the fruitful collaboration between the Federal Government and the state government under His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Aliyu, which has resulted in significant improvements in water accessibility and quality across urban and rural communities.
Furthermore, the Permanent Secretary outlined a comprehensive water distribution plan, allocating 80% of good quality water to urban areas, 50% to semi-urban areas, and 30% to rural communities.
Additionally, irrigation schemes aimed at urban residents are set to provide 60 liters per day, with 39 liters per day allocated for planned rural access.
The Sokoto State delegation made a stop at the office of the Honourable Minister, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev to extend their greetings.
