Wuse Market Unrest: FCT Police Restores Normalcy, Addresses Situation

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Benneth Igwe, has led a team to Wuse Market, the scene of chaos that broke out yesterday, and swiftly restored order.

The team visited the market on Tuesday, 12 March 2024, following reports of civil unrest the same day.

TheFact Daily recalls that chaos broke out yesterday when an angry mob and aggrieved traders set a section of the market on fire after an officer allegedly shot a man who had been charged and convicted.

In a statement issued yesterday, the FCT Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, gave details of a preliminary investigation carried out by operatives of the Command.

According to her, one Ibrahim Yahaya, who was apprehended by operatives of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Task Force was taken before a mobile court which sits every Tuesday in Wuse Market and was convicted.

Yahaya, alongside others, were being conveyed to the prison, when he reportedly jumped from the vehicle and took to his heels in an attempt to escape. Two armed corrections personnel who were in the vehicle went after him and in the process, shot him. The said Ibrahim Yahaya was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors on ground confirmed him dead.

Irked by the development, some irate individuals who witnessed the situation set ablaze 8 vehicles and 10 shops in the environ. The whole fire situation caused uproar from residents but was brought under control by the combined effort of the Federal Fire Service and other security agencies present.
