The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola has assured that the nation’s Fisheries Industry would receive a boost and take its rightful place in the global seafood market.
He gave the assurance during a United States validation and recertification exercise in Lagos, according to a statement made available on Thursday by the Director ,Press and Public Relations, Olujimi Oyetomi.
The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oloruntola stated that the federal government has been working tirelessly to impact millions by harnessing the immense value of Nigeria’s marine resources for sustainable development.
“As we reflect on the immense value of our marine resources, not just as a source of our livelihood for millions of Nigerians but also as a cornerstone of our nation’s biodiversity. The Renewed Hope Agenda emphasizes a commitment to sustainable development and environmental management, underscoring our responsibility to preserve these vital resources.”
He said the validation exercise led by Jared Milton and Blake Price will not only be aligning Nigeria with international best fishing standards but that such compliance will give the nation broader access to global seafood markets.
“Our expectations for this exercise are clear. First, we aim to validate that our fishery vessels are equipped with TEDs that meet global specifications. This is essential for ensuring that Nigeria adheres to conservation protocols, and this, in turn, can earn us greater access to key international markets.
“In line with the present administration’s programme of fostering economic growth and environmental responsibility, the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is committed to creating a balanced approach where economic and ecological priorities co-exist.
This exercise is a crucial step in achieving that balance, helping us build a resilient blue economy that supports both our marine resources and our communities.”
On his part, the Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Wellington Omoragbon expressed delight over the expected recertification, stressing that the TEDs play a crucial role in the conservation of the biodiversity and aquaculture.
In his goodwill message, the Head of the US TED Inspection Team, Mr Jared Milton of the US Department of State commended Nigeria for taking a bold step in preserving the biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. He expressed readiness to observe the TEDs.
