Some passengers sustained injuries on Monday following a train incident near Asham involving equipment belonging to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
The Managing Director of NRC, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the incident in a statement.
NRC said the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. when a rear locomotive made contact with the passenger coach immediately ahead of it due to a coupling issue.
The corporation said the incident was avoidable and that affected passengers were promptly attended to and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
NRC said no fatalities were recorded as emergency response protocols were immediately activated, with technical teams deployed to the scene to manage the situation and ensure the safe continuation of the journey.
The train later arrived at the Idu Railway Station at about 10:39 a.m., approximately 38 minutes behind schedule, after officials removed the affected rear locomotive and a coach identified as SP 0006.
Meanwhile, officials of the Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident in line with standard safety procedures.
The NRC has assured passengers and the general public that safety remains its top priority and pledged to take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence while maintaining safe rail operations.
