NUJ FCT Council Calls For Stronger Security, Urges Wike To Engage Media

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has called on security agencies in the country to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, while urging the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike to strengthen his engagement with journalists in Abuja.

The resolutions were contained in a communique issued at the conclusion of the NUJ FCT Council Congress held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, attended by over 500 members.

On school safety, the Congress urged Federal and State Governments to fully implement the Safe School Initiative and provide adequate perimeter fencing and security personnel, including members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at educational institutions across the country.

The Congress also expressed concern over persistent water supply challenges in the FCT, calling on the FCT Administration and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to urgently address the situation.

On professional conduct, members were reminded to report security matters accurately, objectively and responsibly, while also prioritising their personal safety when carrying out their duties.

The National Secretariat was urged to organise regular workshops to equip journalists with skills required for reporting security issues professionally.

The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to public-interest journalism and the promotion of peace and national development.
