Justice H.O. Eya of the Enugu State High Court has convicted and sentenced self-acclaimed prophet Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, also known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, for defrauding members of his church of ₦136.4 million.
Spokesman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Dele Oyewole, disclosed this on Friday, saying the conviction followed the convict’s guilty plea to a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing, brought by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the anti-graft commission.
The EFCC said the convict falsely claimed he had won ₦30 billion in a lottery and persuaded church members to invest in a scheme promising returns. He also deceived victims into paying for supposed spiritual interventions, including raising the dead and reuniting families.
Justice Eya sentenced him to one year in prison with an option of a ₦500,000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of his landed property to the Federal Government, directing that it be sold to compensate victims.
The case stemmed from petitions by victims, including Mrs. Ngene Nkiruka Jane, who alleged she paid ₦6.7 million after the convict claimed he could resurrect her late husband, and Okey Uwakwe, who said he was defrauded of ₦6.23 million for purported spiritual work.
Investigations revealed that more victims later came forward, alleging the fake prophet sold so-called prosperity items such as “miracle stickers,” “spiritual dragon,” and “Holy Ghost thunder” while operating the fraudulent scheme.
