Borno Police Boss Warns Against Celebratory Gunfire

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajid, has warned armed security personnel against the indiscriminate discharge of firearms during weddings, cultural festivals, political rallies and other social gatherings.

The police commissioner who described the practice as reckless and dangerous, also directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to begin sustained sensitization campaigns across the state to curb celebratory gunfire.

According to the command, the engagements will involve traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth groups, Vigilante Security Outfits (VSOs), the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and other stakeholders to educate residents on the dangers and legal consequences of indiscriminate gunfire.

Abdulmajid stressed that firearms are issued solely for the protection of lives and property and must never be used for celebration or entertainment.

He noted that bullets fired into the air eventually return to the ground and can kill or injure innocent people or damage property.

The commissioner warned that any armed security personnel found discharging firearms indiscriminately or aiding such acts would face disciplinary measures and other legal sanctions in line with the law.

He also appealed to members of the public to report anyone, including security personnel, involved in celebratory gunfire to the nearest police station or divisional headquarters, assuring residents that the identities of informants would be kept confidential.

The Borno State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to celebrate responsibly without engaging in acts that endanger others.
